Sylvan Lake - Virginia Beach Neighborhoods

Sylvan Lake is the coolest little neighborhood you never heard of in Virginia Beach. Located in the middle of Great Neck with tree lined roads and an early 80’s architectural appeal, Sylvan Lake is a neighborhood that reminds me of my childhood. It is unique for two reasons. First, the houses are cool looking in that back to the future kind of way. Look at the pictures below and you will see what I mean.

Sylvan Lake is a lake and a neighborhood!

And second, there’s a big lake in the middle of the neighborhood that you can swim in! Or kayak in. Even fish in! Not interested in swimming in the lake? Both the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay are 10 minutes away. If neighborhood pools are your thing, the Alanton Pool is just around the corner and well worth checking out.
The homes in Sylvan Lake run around $500,000. The neighborhood is located in the middle of Great Neck, just down the street from First Colonial High School. Your kids will go to Alanton Elementary and Lynnhaven Middle, which are highly regarded.

Is Sylvan Lake man made?

Some of the people I talk to say that Sylvan Lake was man made. This makes sense because I’ve seen pictures of the Alanton Pool back in the late ‘60s, and it was clearly a giant sand pit. Sylvan Lake seems very similar to me. However, some of the residents claim Mother Nature made it. Since I am not a geologist, I give more weight to the claims of the people who live there, so let’s say it is a natural lake. If you know better, please let me know. (Looking at it on the map, it appears very rectangular and man-made). Either way, those living around the lake require flood insurance to the tune of about $1000 per year. The lake feeds into Mill Dam Creek which runs behind Baycliff into Broad Bay.

One of the neighborhood characteristics that I really like in Sylvan Lake is the mature landscaping. Sylvan Lake is very beautiful, in part, because of the greenery.

And then there is the lake in the middle of the neighborhood. What’s not to like about that! This house in Sylvan Lake is truly unique.

Homes don’t come on the market very often in Sylvan Lake, but when they do, the buyers come out in droves. And for good reasons! It’s a beautiful neighborhood, fairly priced, and the middle of Great Neck. We all know what that means; great schools, great people, great amenities, low crime, fantastic location close to the beach, bay, Whole Foods, and more.
